Patient Ergonomics

Patient Work System

Over the past decade, Drs. Richard Holden and Rupa Valdez have promoted a community of practice called patient ergonomics, defined as:

the application of human factors/ergonomics or related discipline[s] (e.g., human-computer interaction, usability engineering) to study or improve patients’ and other non-professionals’ performance of effortful work activities in pursuit of health goals.

To put it simply, patient ergonomics is the science (and engineering) of patient work. Patients and other non-professionals perform effortful, goal-driven, consequential health-related work. By applying human factors and ergonomics theories, methods, tools, and approaches to this work, we can make it better: easier; safer; more effective; and perhaps more satisfying.
